They eat rodents, \u00a0rabbits, lizards, birds, plants and sometimes sheep. We saw lots of these on farms (estancias).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_725\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_3115.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-725\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-725\" src=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_3115-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Magellan Penguins on Chiloe Island\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_3115-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_3115-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_3115.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-725\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Magellan Penguins on Chiloe Island<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <strong>Magellan penguins<\/strong> were first spotted in 1520 by Ferdinand Magellan when he was exploring the water later called the Magellan Strait. \u00a0They are also found in Brasil, Argentina &amp; the Falkands, but only in South America. \u00a0I saw these in Punta Arenas and the island of Chiloe. \u00a0It as really funny watching them trying to get onto the rocks and getting washed back off by the ocean. \u00a0 One clever one, who had obviously been doing it for a long time, did it first time by riding the waves. \u00a0Others were using the seaweed to hold on. \u00a0I also saw <strong>Humbolt penguins<\/strong> named after the current they follow. \u00a0They are threatened due to over-fishing and water pollution so it was quite nice to see them in the wild. \u00a0We also saw <strong>Sea Otters<\/strong>, but they were very quick and hard to photograph. \u00a0They were in pairs and lived near the penguin island. \u00a0They float on their backs to eat the shellfish like oysters \u00a0and small fish.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_645\" style=\"width: 273px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1840.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-645\" class=\"wp-image-645 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1840-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1840\" width=\"263\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1840-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1840-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1840-800x600.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1840.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-645\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nandu.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Nandu<\/strong> (or Rhea) live \u00a0on grass lands (pampas) only in South America, but some escaped from a zoo in Germany and are now breeding. they have no ability to fly although have big wings. We saw these on the way to El Calafate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_647\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1845.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-647\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-647\" src=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1845-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Guanaco\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1845-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1845-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1845-800x600.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_1845.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guanaco<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We saw these <strong>Guanacos<\/strong> in Torres Del Paine National Park, where there were lots of them in the herds of around ten female adults and their babies. \u00a0There are lots of them in the park as their only predator is the mountain lion or puma, and there are no sheep or cows allowed in the park to take their grass. \u00a0They have evolved to have thicker skin on their necks to help protect them from attacks. My Uncle Tim saw one being eaten by a Puma and he said the plains looked like the graveyard from the Lion King!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_651\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_2755.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-651\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-651\" src=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_2755-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Dead Armadillo\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_2755-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_2755-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_2755-800x600.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.walkerfamilytravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_2755.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dead Armadillo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I saw this dead <strong>Armadillo<\/strong> by the side of the road when we stopped on our way back from Los Glaciers National Park. \u00a0I had already seen two live ones at the Estancia La Margarita, but they are nocturnal and hard to find (unless dead).
